Attached, please find a few shots of an osprey taken on May 12, 2007, while walking along the beach at Caumsett, half way between the main drive to the water and the fisherman’s drive. I rarely carry a camera with me while hiking the park, but did this time to take some shots of the bluffs. While doing that, along came the bird. I got a shot or two off while it was in the air and it flew down the beach a hundred yards or so and set down on a dead limb. I walked over to where it was and was surprised to see that it had a large fish in its claws, and also surprised that it did not take off as I got nearly beneath the branch it was on. From other experience, I know these birds do not stay on a perch when approached, so I think that this one stayed in place because it had such a large fish in tow that it did not want to fly again with it. - John Cofman

Above: Photographs by Jennifer Cinquemani Quote from Jennifer: My father and I just recently discovered the park and have become addicted. He lives in Queens and I in Smithtown and we meet once a week with my 4 & 6 year olds to go biking. It is truly a hidden gem on Long Island. |
Above: Photographs by Judy Aubin. Quote from Judy: I attached some pictures I took at the park on 9/2/07. We saw a red tailed hawk that I managed to get a couple of good pictures of and also what I think was a Magnolia warbler. |
Above: Photographs by Graham Lott. Quote from Graham: I have been coming to Caumsett for years. I think it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. |
Above: Photographs by David Lepelstat. Quote from David: I was at Caumsett this past weekend and was treated to sunny skies with just enough clouds to make the skies interesting. I usually bike when the weather is warmer, but enjoyed taking the long walk with my camera as a change of pace. |
Above photographs were submitted by: April Jerold. My husband and I love the park and enjoy going at all times of the year, hiking off the beaten path sometimes to see the park from different aspects, and to try to catch sight of wildlife. (We spotted a red fox!) |
