Caumsett Friends Group Awarded Matching Grant To Continue Park Restoration

The Caumsett Foundation is proud to announce it has been awarded a $300,000 matching grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.  The State funds (along with the like-amount matching funds raised by the Foundation - totaling $600,000), will be used to repair the structure which surrounds the historic Walled Garden at Caumsett.  Built by Marshall Field III more than 90 years ago, the 8’ high, 1,672’ long wall encloses the four-acre space, one of the most significant features of the Park.  Considerable deterioration has made the structure a safety hazard requiring immediate attention.

Restoration of the garden itself began in 2000, and this grant combined with the funds raised by the Foundation, will allow work to continue.  Maintaining the garden is part of the Foundation’s environmental initiative which is working to encourage the biodiversity of plants, animals and insects.

The Walled Garden is one of the most popular public locations in the Park, and was visited by many of the more than 400,000 guests in 2012.  Work is expected to begin this spring.

The Caumsett Foundation is a broad-based community organization incorporated in 1997, whose primary focus is on raising money in order to maintain the buildings, gardens and environment of the Park.  The Foundation during the past ten years has raised six million dollars to accomplish these goals.
